THE MAGIC OF MULCH
Using quality bark mulch in landscapes, and applying it correctly, offers several benefits that contribute to the overall health and aesthetics of your garden beds and the property as a whole.
- Weed Control: A proper layer of mulch suppresses weeds and helps block windblown seeds from getting to the soil and germinating.
- Water Saver: Mulch helps retain soil moisture by reducing evaporation ensuring plants stay hydrated longer.
- Soil Temperature Regulation: Soil temperature is regulated in summer because the mulch blocks sunlight and shades the soil while in winter, it insulates the soil and plant roots.
- Improved Soil: Over time, bark mulch breaks down to enrich the soil as it provides essential nutrients and promotes beneficial soil organisms.
- Aesthetics: Lastly, proper mulch application adds visual appeal to a landscape. It provides a neat and cohesive appearance, and the right color and texture can really compliment the overall design.
DRAINAGE ISSUES
Drainage problems in your yard should be addressed as soon as possible to maintain a healthy landscape and prevent damage to your property or home.
If you have standing water, soggy spots, or basement leaks, you most likely have drainage challenges which shouldn’t be ignored.
Some drainage issue solutions can be simple, such as inspecting the gutters and downspouts on your home to make sure they are clear of debris. If they are, extending the downspout to send the water farther away may also work.
Different solutions such as a gutter leader exit drain (shown) catch basins, channel drains, French drains, sump pumps, and drywells can also be effective, but growing extremely fast in popularity are rain gardens!
WHAT IS A RAIN GARDEN?
A rain garden is basically a low area, with plants, where water is allowed to pool and slowly seep into the ground. To create a rain garden, a collection basin is dug, the area is amended with dirt and gravel, then, plants that don’t mind having wet roots are placed.
A few popular plants for rain gardens in our area are: New England Asters, Winterberry, Joe Pye Weed, Coneflowers, and Red Twig Dogwood.
Our landscape consultants have completed the Rain Garden, Design, Installation, and Maintenance Course offered by The Center for Land Use Education and Research in conjunction with UCONN College of Agriculture, Health. and Natural Resources. Please let us know if you’d like any additional information.
SPRING CLEAN UPS
During this service, crews will remove any debris and dead foliage that has accumulated over the winter. Fallen leaves, branches, and other organic matter can easily suffocate your plants, block essential sunlight, or create a breeding ground for pests and diseases. By clearing out these materials, we create a healthier environment for all the greenery and sets a nice stage for a lush, vibrant and healthy outdoor space!
