August is typically one of the hottest summer months and it is important to keep your new plantings watered regularly because their roots need this time to continue growing deep and strong. You should also pay special attention to plantings in direct sun and near concrete or pavement where temperatures are normally higher and any rain we do get doesn’t always have a chance to soak the soil sufficiently. Container plantings may need to be watered twice a day if you are not using self-watering pots. With 50 days of summer left before autumn, August is also a great time to look for pests in your turf and on your plants so they can be addressed. What exactly is a hardscape? It can best be described as inanimate or non-living objects also known as “hard materials” that are used in landscape design such as concrete, stone, wood, or metal. These materials can be used to create elements for both design and function. While the softscape is anything that is alive, growing, changing and flourishing, the hardscape is the opposite – solid and enduring but equally as important to consider.
Sidewalks and pathways allow you to access different areas of the property safely, while a retaining wall can add more usable space or help prevent erosion. Fire pits, patios, decks and gazebos create wonderful spaces for gathering outdoors and a fountain or water feature will add the soothing sounds of water. From a simple concrete sidewalk to an elaborate and expertly crafted outdoor kitchen, hardscaping is the design element that completes the look.
A well-planned hardscape can also increase the value of your home. Specific design features can add more livable space, create visual interest, provide functionality and safety, and visually pull the entire landscape together.

100% repurposed

Many people have asked us what we did with the 3-ton, solid granite sign that was out in front of headquarters when we replaced it with our new one last winter.
Well, it didn’t go far. We moved it out back to the field and repurposed it into a large, extremely sturdy, durable, and unbelievably heavy table.

WISH UPON A SHOOTING STAR!

The Perseid meteor shower occurs every year from about July 22 to August 22 as the Earth crosses the orbit of the debris field from the Swift-Tuttle comet. During the peak around August 12, a “meteor a minute” can be observed. Unfortunately, this year the full moon will hinder viewing a bit as it also lights up the night sky. It’s not too early to go out at night to look up and, with some patience, you can see them as early as 10:00PM.
The best time to view the meteor shower will be in the pre-dawn hours, but they can still be seen in the late evening. You will just need a dark sky and a comfortable place to keep your eyes to the skies. When John Denver sang, “I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky” in his hit Rocky Mountain High, he was referring to this meteor shower he witnessed on a mountain peak in Colorado!
