GRASS CUTTING 101, CHINCH BUGS, AND MORE!

Although Memorial Day weekend was the “unofficial” kickoff of summer, we are still two weeks away from its rightful start when the summer solstice occurs at 5:13AM on Tuesday the 21st.

This time of year is special for us because everything is blooming, grass is green and lush, the colors are bright and cheerful, and our entire staff gets to see the fruits of their labor as the growing season progresses. Certain properties, trees, and even individual plants can be very special to us and are like old friends that we look forward to visiting with each year as everything comes back to life.

It also makes us happy to hear your compliments to our team members! We post your comments in the shop for all to see, and they are also taken into account when it is time to calculate monthly and yearly employee award winners. GRASS CUTTING 101

When we arrive on a new client’s property for the initial consultation, we inspect the lawn to determine: property size, type of grass, levels of shade, and any possible obstructions. We then suggest an appropriate mowing schedule.

Proper lawn mowing techniques are important for the health of your grass and soil, and are adjusted with seasonal changes in the weather. For example, in the hot summer, we will leave the grass a little taller to help shade the soil below and keep it from becoming too dry from excessive evaporation. We also recommend leaving the lawn clippings in the grass to assist in shading the soil and feeding the lawn as they quickly decompose.
Mower blades are always kept as sharp as possible so the grass is cut cleanly and not damaged by dull cutting edges that tear and shred the grass. Mowing patterns are changed to help the grass grow straighter and healthier.
The two most common mowing errors made by DIYers, are mowing too short and too often. Please contact your landscape consultant with any mowing questions or concerns you may have.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

JUNE IS POLLINATOR MONTH

So not all “bugs” are bad. Many insects are outstanding pollinators and without them, only sea life could survive on the planet. If the pollinators die off, so do humans. Of all the crops grown world-wide for human food, 70-80% rely on pollination from insects and birds. ‘Save the Bees’ isn’t just a cute catchphrase, it’s a call to arms.

FROM TERRIFIC TO TERRIBLE – CHINCH BUGS

Chinch bugs will suck the life out of your beautiful lawn—literally. These pests feed on juices from plant tissues while injecting chemicals that clog the vascular system of the plant. A yellow halo around infested areas is typical of chinch bug activity and early detection is key in removing them and lessening the unsightly damage they cause.
Never assume that weather, or your dog, is responsible for any irregularities in your lawn because it could be these little critters. Factors that make lawns more susceptible to chinch bug attack are severe water stress, excess thatch, and excess nitrogen. Your landscape consultant can address chinch bugs with sustainable, pesticide-free control that involves managing conditions to improve grass health and, in turn, build resistance to chinch bugs and other unwelcome pests.
