Happy 4th of July!
This holiday celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the separation of the colonies from Great Britian’s rule 247 years ago. While we no longer ring bells, build bonfires or fire cannons to celebrate, we have held on to the traditions of fireworks and food – lots of food.
While you are having fun with friends and family, please take a moment on this special day to reflect on what independence means to you.
Enjoy the day and stay safe! ~Shayne

COLOR–CHANGING HYDRANGEAS
Did you know that there are over 75 different species of hydrangeas with over 600 cultivars? This garden favorite is loved by gardeners everywhere because they thrive is almost all US zones, and with a 2-foot growth rate each season, they can quickly grow to full size in only a few years. They are also easy to care for and do not need much more than adequate sun and water.
But why do some change color? Why is the pink hydrangea you bought turning purple? it all comes down to the pH levels of the soil. Alkaline soil will produce pink flowers while acidic soil will turn the flowers a lovely blue. There is also a small range where if the pH is just right, blueish-purple or pinkish-purple flowers will emerge.
Please note that white hydrangeas lack the color pigments of the pink and blue varieties and will always stay white regardless of their soil conditions. If you have your heart set on one color over another, look for varieties that keep their color regardless of the soil pH.
The best times to plant hydrangeas are in the late fall or early spring so please talk to your landscape consultant if you’d like to add hydrangeas to your garden.
