Summer Deer Protection
As summer arrives, your lush gardens and vibrant landscapes become a colorful and irresistible buffet for local deer. While these graceful animals are a beautiful part of nature, they can cause significant damage to ornamental plants, shrubs, and young trees. Protecting your landscape from hungry deer during the summer is essential to maintaining the health and beauty of your outdoor spaces.
One of the most effective strategies is incorporating deer-resistant plants into your landscape design. While no plant is completely deer-proof, many species are less palatable to deer due to their texture, scent, or taste and are most often labeled “deer-resistant”. Examples include lavender, boxwood, yarrow, and most ornamental grasses. Strategically placing these plants around more vulnerable ones can act as a natural deterrent.
Physical barriers such as fencing are another reliable method. A deer fence should be at least 7 – 8 feet tall to prevent deer from easily jumping over. For smaller areas, netting or individual plant cages can offer targeted protection.
Additionally, motion-activated sprinklers and lights can startle deer and discourage them from returning. Barking dogs can also do this job very well.
Finally, consider using deer repellents—either sprays or homemade solutions. These products rely on strong scents or tastes to discourage browsing but must be applied regularly and reapplied after heavy rain. We have found that this method yields impressive results.
