“One kind word can warm three winter months.” – Japanese Proverb
JANUARY THAW
January Thaw is the term applied to the climatic phenomenon of unseasonably warm weather or rise in temperature in mid-January of North American winters. You could call it winter’s equivalent of autumn’s Indian Summer.
This “thaw” can last a few days or a few weeks and while it is not an official weather term, it is described as a “singularity”, meaning it happens more regularly than chance would allow.

KEEPING A LANDSCAPE JOURNAL
Some folks love to observe all the interesting things going on in their yards and some even enjoy taking notes or sketching flowers.
Garden planners, a journal, a simple notebook, or smartphone app are all useful tools to help you keep track of all the things happening on your property. You can note when you add new plants and monitor their progress. You could also keep a weather log, set reminders for planting, harvesting, dividing, or cutting back, plan a new garden, or note wildlife sightings to keep an on-going history of your landscape. Kids especially like to note their discoveries and is a great introduction to the wonders of the outdoors!
