With three snow events since that groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter weather, wildly fluctuating temps, and now more daylight, we are surely ready to welcome the vernal equinox and the beginning of the Spring season on Sunday!
We’ve been doing housekeeping at HQ, updating and streamlining our procedures and processes, performing dormant pruning and getting all our equipment ready for the upcoming season. We will be starting spring clean-ups on properties very soon and before we know it, we’ll be in full green season mode and winter will be a distant memory.
Now is the perfect time to reach out to your landscape consultant if you’re considering scheduling any projects on your property this year. -Shayne

MULCH MADNESS!!
Mulch is one of the most important additions to assist in the health and appearance of your yardscape. Mulch can help to suppress weeds, regulate soil temperatures, maintain moisture levels, hinder erosion, protect roots, and add immediate visual impact to the look and feel of your property by giving it an overall neat and well-kept appearance. While mulch can be naturally occurring, such as grass clippings, fallen leaves, twigs, bark and spent flower blooms, there are also several organic prepared types of mulch which we have delivered fresh – by the tons. But beware – all mulch is NOT the same!
Mulch has many benefits and choosing the right one is very important. Organic mulch like grass. hay, leaves, or wood will decompose over time and give nutrients to the soil while inorganic mulch such as gravel, plastic, rubber, or landscape cloth is much more long lasting. Just like anything else, you get what you pay for so know where your mulch is coming from and how to use it.
Some hardwood mulch can carry diseases, pests and most commonly, the artillery fungus – so called because it “shoots” spores that land up to 20 feet away. These spores adhere to surfaces resulting in small, dark spots on your siding, cars, lawn furniture and anything else close by. While it is harmless to humans and pets, the spots are unsightly and almost impossible to remove.
The mulch we have delivered from Maine each spring is mostly bark which is much more resistant to pests and diseases. It has also been thoroughly cleaned and prepared so nothing but clean mulch is crossing state lines and inhabiting your property.
There are also a few factors to look at when mulching and calculations are needed to determine the the correct amount of mulch to be used. Trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetables require differences in mulching. Depending on the area being mulched and the plants living there, the type of mulch and the depth of mulch needed are taken into consideration. A layer of mulch that is too thick or improperly placed can hinder water absorption in the soil thus preventing it from reaching the roots. It can also invite mold when damp or overheat the soil below in dry summer months.
