AUTUMN, ELEVATE RECAP, GOLF WINNERS

Happy Autumn!
It’s that time again when we transition from the growing season to fall. As we said goodbye to summer, we held our annual fundraising golf tournament and attended a landscape industry conference in Florida. Now, while most people are beginning to spend less time outdoors, the season presents different and specific tasks and responsibilities for us as we prepare the properties we look after for the upcoming seasons. Some of these duties include, but are not limited to: fall planting, pruning, deer control, shutting down irrigation systems, dividing bulbs, lawn aeration and seeding, and fall decor.

The weather kept us guessing up until 6:00AM, but cleared just in time for the 17th Annual YardScapes Quad-Am Golf Classic to go on as scheduled! We are still waiting on some final receipts, and once we crunch the numbers we are confident that will will once again present Pratt Nature Center with another very generous donation.

The week following the tournament we attended Elevate, a 3-day national conference and exposition for landscape and lawn care professionals in Orlando, Florida. Sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals, this conference was filled 51 learning sessions, 18 campfire sessions, endless networking, a trade show with 147 exhibitors, and closing remarks by entrepreneur, former NFL quarterback, and NFL analyst Joe Theismann.
This annual conference is the best way for industry professionals to stay on top of future trends, learn what works and doesn’t from other business leaders, see all the new products available, and discuss the future of the industry.

“I really appreciate the opportunity to have a chance to share some stories, share some ideas,” Theismann says. “The most important thing is I’m not here to tell them how to be successful. First of all, I’m there to learn from them. Because I think we always have a learning experience, and secondly, I want to make the best session they have.”
One story Theismann shared was about his short-lived career as a punter, where he still holds the league’s record for the lowest punt average. When others mocked him, Theismann responded he has never had a failure in his life, just an educational experience that did not go his way. Wise words for us all – regardless of the industry we are in.

In addition to all the informational sessions and networking, there were also opportunities to have some fun. Shayne was instrumental in helping his team win NALP’s version of Family Feud and attendees also had access to Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park.

DEER CONTROL

While deer can be fun and interesting to watch, they can also cause significant damage to the plants and trees on your property. They will feed on almost any plant and they rub their antlers against trees, damaging the bark and putting the overall health of the tree in jeopardy. Once deer are accustomed to visiting your property, they may be hard to move out and solutions that worked in the summer months may not work in the winter.
Since deer find almost any plant palatable, strategic solutions to deter them from your property can be put into place. The right combination of plants, the location of those plants, fencing, and deer deterrents can all be used to help keep them from eating your investment.
